R.U.S.H is initiating three to five innovative programs and exploring options to ensure those programs are progressive, relevant and worthwhile producing specific measurable results. Programs are open to all young people in need of relief from distress, misfortune or where they may be health challenged and who are willing to honour the agreements of R.U.S.H.
R.U.S.H. Haven inc is committed to assisting all youth, their families, siblings and community and our programs are our outreach. Each young person represents a different challenge to our staff. Our goal is for boys and girls to leave our programs feeling good about themselves and to be in a space of choice about their lives and ready to make a positive contribution to society and themselves.
Dolphin Assisted Therapy Program
R.U.S.H has created various Dolphin / Human Therapy Programs with new programs completed in November 2004 so far. The theory and research behind dolphin-assisted therapy relates to the production of certain brainwaves and electromagnetic heart energy that are specific and easily measurable before and after human/cetacean interaction occurs. There has also been books written and scientific research into the Dolphins ability to heal through vibration and the use of sonar whilst in their environment.
Perhaps they communicate on a cellular level, helping our bodies to re-program cells and DNA to assist our healing. When we meet with and interact with Dolphins on their terms in the wild, where they are free to come and go, we experience joy, excitement and happiness. When we are happy we learn better, heal quicker, lessen stress and can experience a connection with each others and the dolphins on a very deep spiritual level. It is often that children will increase attention as a result of a desire to interact with dolphins. Children and adults for that matter can have such a great time that they truly wish to have this experience occur again, and will assist through potential behaviour alterations for the space for that to happen IE they will help each other to make sure the programs happen again.
Thus, the general purpose of the program is motivational, although specific objectives for each child may include health, behaviours related to speech, language, gross or fine motor development, rote or conceptual thinking, etc. Ideally, the program can "jump start" a child and complements and reinforces therapies or other procedures used in more traditional helping approaches. The objective of dolphin therapy is to motivate and increase confidence and self healing, so that the child will benefit even more from the help of other professionals. ONGOING FUNDING REQUIRED
Wilderness Therapy
Wilderness therapy programs trace their origins to outdoor survival programs that placed children in a challenging environment where determination, communication and team efforts were outcomes. Children with low self-esteem, oppositional, defiant and conduct problems discovered their potential as well as the individual and group skills necessary to become successful in life. The top wilderness therapy programs are viable alternative to traditional therapy, residential treatment programs and psychiatric hospitals. For the most part, wilderness therapy programs are based on behavioural models and experiential education.
These approaches to working with children are widely accepted forms of treatment and intervention for both adults and children. Clients can enjoy fishing, canoeing, abseiling, white water rafting, swimming, arts and crafts, softball, basketball, cooking, soccer, archery, nature study, drama and science experiments. ONGOING FUNDING ESSENTIAL
Work / living Skills Program
These programs are of a variable length depending on each clients needs and are designed to provide them with a set of useable social and work skills that will lead them to full time employment and semi to independent living. Each program is based in the National Competencies for the work skill area and is designed to lead to assessment for the acquisition of National Certificates. Programs to date have been Carpentry and Farm Labour Skills. FUNDING REQUIRED
Writing and Music Therapy Programs
R.U.S.H would like to establish a Children's Art Project, which provides writing and music therapy programs to encourage young people to express themselves while enhancing their self-esteem.
Writing workshops are taught by professional writers to improve basic communications skills, provide them with emotional release and enhance their academic performance.
Music therapy enables children to use music as a means of group interaction, self-expression and entertainment. FUNDING REQUIRED
Drama Therapy Program
R.U.S.H. would like to develop a program to combine the aims and techniques of drama/theatre with those of psychotherapy to treat individuals in crisis and help those with special needs to expand their quality of life.
